Last cannon netting for 2012

On Friday I agreed with guys from the tip that we'll come at 8 to Jakuševec and that they'll see where to put us. It looked great with really big number of gulls and we had a big team coming so i rolled few more rings.. just in case:) I rolled 400 for BHG :) Maybe too much..

We came at 7:45 and there were no sign of workers coming . They came at 8:30 and slowly started removing rubbish from the tip. It was horribly SLOW!! After they moved me from the place I wanted to put net they found much better place for me..We just had to wait for half an hour so that they clean the place.. It turn out to be much more than that and after quick set, we started waiting for gulls at 11:30!!!

All in all it didn't get that bad. In two catches we ringed 124 BHGs, 8 YLGs and 3 Caspians.

Good thing is that we continued our series of 100+ birds ringed :) but i think it's time for (at least one) 300+ day:)

Here are Caspians:

Europe checked, Africa checked

Yesterday I was really surprised when I got e-mail from Foued Hamza telling me he found one of the BHGs I ringed :) It wouldn't be that fun if it wasn't on other continent:) It was S994 and he found it in Gulf of Gabes in Tunisia!!! The bird was ringed on Jakuševec December 13th 2009 and it is it's first recovery.

I was hoping for some times now that some of the guys who are looking for LBBG in N Africa will find some of my birds and the day has finally come! Now it's time for Asia and America:)

Merry Xmas everybody!

Jakuševec 2012.2.0

The weekend started great! On Friday I went to check if everything is ok with our arrival on Sunday and check if there are enough gulls on the tip. I was there for hour and a half and managed to read more than 30 rings :) Highliht was Hiddensee BHG. My very first!! Funny thing is that I didn't manage to read the first character on black ring so I couldn't determine the project it belongs to. Luckily I read a part of metal ring so I sent an email to cr-birding group and after less than half an hour I got an answer that it's black XT11 ringed in Saxonia in July 2012. Beside it I read around 20 of mine BHGs, 8 Croatian michahellis, and 4 Polish cach crings and part of one metal. My biggest problem was that compactor driver told us to come at 6 am on Sunday :(

So we came.. Not at 6, but 6:40. It was very dense fog. There was no one on the tip. So we walked around, drink coffee and waited...and waited... and they came at 8...

It was really nice working with them. They are trying everything to help you, except I couldn't agree with guy on compactor what we need from him :(

First catch was really poor.. around 15 birds.. :( After fast extraction I went ringing with Lori and others were resetting the net for the new catch. Also Kruno and Budimir were putting bread in the middle of catching area to attract more BHGs..

I was almost finished with processing birds when the net was ready and gulls started coming so I went to car , checked the circuit and wait..Lots of BHGs started landing in the catching area but i couldn't get the clear window to take a catch... And then finally safe zone was clear and I had a window :).  It was one of the best shots we had ever!!! more than 140 birds!!!! Team played great and we emptied the net very quickly. After that we decided not to take any more catches because of lack of people who could help me ring and lot's of mud around.

Final score
BHG                   149
Common Gull          2
Caspian                  3
YLG                       9

total                    163
